These pearls were collected as a result of magickal enchantment. According to the story conveyed to us, a native in a remote area was journeying in the forest and was quite thirsty after some time; he looked around and spied some coconuts which he plucked a few. After satisfying his thirst, he turned around to get some more for his family--but the tree was no longer there! In its place on the ground were these pearls as shown in the picture.

According to the legend, two shamans, an uncle and nephew, were contesting. The nephew's head was decapitated but he managed to restore it. When the uncle's head rolled-off, a wild-dog ran away with it and chewed it up. The nephew decapitated the dog's head and placed it on his uncle's body--thus the Baong was born. But for some reason the head was placed wrongly and now faces backwards. Locals fear this creature which haunts the forests and jungles of East Java.

The pearls were found in the den of the Baong creature and is believed to come from it.
